OUR PROCESS

BALLAST DESIGNS DRAW FROM FINE ARTS, TRADITIONAL CRAFT AND EXPERIMENTAL PRACTICES. THROUGH THE EXPLORATION AND UNIFICATION OF MATERIAL, DESIGNER GARY DILLON CREATES FURNITURE AND LIGHTING OBJECTS FOCUSED ON SHAPE AND TEXTURE.

DRAWING FROM AN EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND IN FABRICATION, SCULPTURE AND MIXED MEDIA; DILLON WORKS WITH REGIONAL ARTISTS AND MATERIALS, HANDMADE COMPONENTS AND TEXTILES TO CREATE UNIQUE, HERITAGE QUALITY PIECES.

Wood

The innate beauty of wood creates the opportunity for a unique approach to each piece. Slabs are hand picked from regional sawmills on the East Coast and treated with a range of custom finishes, developed by designer Gary Dillon, to complement and accentuate the wood’s natural qualities.

METAL

With over 15 years of experience in machining, welding, foundry work and flame forming, brass, bronze and steel are forged to create strong lines and unique silhouettes. Patinas are applied by hand using traditional techniques giving each piece an artisanal finish.

Glass

We work with a tight knit community of glass artists to produce custom components and achieve a unique vision for each piece. Expert gaffers make each piece with a variety of techniques that include free form blowing, mold blowing, and kiln slumping.

Textile & Leather

Vegetable tanned leather is carefully sourced, precision cut, dyed with our proprietary formulas, and sealed with a rubbed beeswax finish. We offer a range of textiles for our built to order furniture. Have a custom fabric? We will work with you to make it part of your piece.

Bench Work

Our designs draw from techniques perfected in the art of jewelry making; using artisan work, hand carved wax and molten metal for precise, handmade quality.
